Silverbacks Get Back on Track with 2-0 Romp of Tampa Bay

Sunday June 20, 2010

ATLANTA, GA – The Atlanta Silverbacks got back to their winning ways this Saturday with a strong 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Hellenic. The victory was Atlanta’s third of the season over Tampa Bay in three matching, completing the season sweep.

The ‘Backs were able to outscore the Hellenic by a total of 10-0 over the course of the three games. Tampa Bay’s record fell to 3-3-1, with all three losses coming at the hands of the Silverbacks.

Atlanta’s Megan Tomlinson added a goal, her third of the year, to help secure the victory for the Silverbacks.

The win was an important one for Atlanta, after the team suffered its first loss of the season in its last game against the Charlotte Lady Eagles, after injuries had depleted the Silverbacks’ roster. Atlanta will have two chances to atone for the game, playing Charlotte in the final two matches of the season.

Atlanta now holds a strong 5-1-1 record on the year and sits comfortably atop the Atlantic Division. The Silverbacks are running neck and neck with the Washington Freedom for the lead of both the Eastern Conference and the entire W-League.

After last weekend’s 5-0 drubbing of Tampa Bay, Atlanta midfielder Megan Tomlinson was named to the W-League Team of the Week. She had one goal and added an assist on Alexa Newfield’s goal in the match. Tomlinson now leads the Silverbacks in points with three goals and three assists in seven games.

Atlanta has also been featured on Goal.com by author Eric Betts. Check out a great article on the Silverbacks – Hellenic rivalry here. Betts attended the Silverbacks’ home opener and is doing extensive research on the history of soccer in the United States for a book. Along the way, he will be writing a series of columns and the Silverbacks are proud that he asked the 11 year-old franchise to be a part of it.

The Silverbacks return home this Friday, June 25th for a rematch with the Northern Virginia Majestics. Atlanta beat Northern Virginia earlier in the year by a score of 1-0.
