The Atlanta Silverbacks continue to add depth to their roster, announcing the signings of defender JOSH SUGGS and midfielder FERRETY SOUSA on Friday afternoon, pending USSF approval.
The pair of signings brings the Silverbacks active roster count to 29, giving the team exceptional depth heading into the 2013 NASL Fall Season and ultimately November’s Soccer Bowl.
Suggs, 24, comes to the Silverbacks after most recently playing with USL Pro side Los Angeles Blues. The 6-foot defender started his professional career with the Blues in 2011 before earning a contract with Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in 2012. Even though Suggs was under contract with the MLS side, he spent nearly the whole time on loan with one of the Silverbacks’ NASL foes, the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
The Las Cruces, N.M. native returned to the Blues in late 2012, making nine appearances in USL Pro league play. A four-year player at Humboldt State University in northern California, Suggs earned conference honors in three of his four seasons, and served as the team’s captain during his senior season.
“Josh provides our back line with cover at two different positions, and we’ve been really pleased with his level of play,” said Silverbacks Head Coach BRIAN HAYNES. “Since I have a natural bias towards left-footed players, it’s great to add yet another gifted lefty to the fray.”
Also joining the Silverbacks is Sousa, who has been training with the team for an extended period of time. Orginally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sousa grew up in Raleigh, N.C. Ironically enough, the 5-foot-6 midfielder could see his first league action against his hometown professional team, the Carolina RailHawks, who will be visiting Atlanta Silverbacks Park on Saturday night.
Sousa is very familiar with the RailHawks organization, having played for their U-23 team when they won the USASA national championship in 2011. He most recently played with French side FCM Aubervilliers before participating in the NASL Combine earlier this year.
“We’re very excited to sign Ferrety as we continue to bring more youth and creativity into our team,” Haynes said. “He gives us tremendous pace and versatility and we’re very excited to welcome him to the Silverbacks family.”
Sousa will wear #25, while Suggs will wear #33. The pair could be available to play as early as Saturday night against the Carolina RailHawks. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Atlanta Silverbacks Park and tickets are still available by calling 404-969-4900 or visiting atlantasilverbacksfc.com.
