MIAMI, Fla. (September 16, 2013) – Atlanta Silverbacks forward Ruben Luna scored the opening goal in his side’s first victory in six games and assisted on the game-winner to earn North American Soccer League Player of the Week honors.
The Mexican striker was on hand after 13 minutes of a 2-1 home win over the San Antonio Scorpions to score from close range and open an early lead then six minutes into the second half provided a perfect pass for Danny Barrera to double the advantage. Luna might have added to his haul, but missed a last-minute penalty kick.
“I want to thank the coaches for helping me since I’ve been here,” Luna said. “It feels great to be named Player of the Week, but it’s just something to be recognized for and nothing more. I was just glad to get the chance to play.”

The Ciudad Victoria, Mexico native returned to the Silverbacks on September 5 having scored seven goals in all competitions during Atlanta’s NASL Spring Season title win. He had left Atlanta in July to pursue a playing opportunity in Europe.
The former member of Mexico’s U-20 national team initially joined the Silverbacks in 2013 after a spell with MLS side FC Dallas. He was an instant hit in Atlanta, scoring a total of seven goals in 13 appearances in NASL and U.S. Open Cup play.
“Ruben’s work rate was great, he sacrificed his body, and he never gave up the ball, so I’m very proud of his performance,” said Silverbacks Head Coach Brian Haynes. “I’m very happy that we were able to re-sign him, and it was nice to see him step up and score a very important goal.”
The Silverbacks take to the road this Saturday when they travel to Al Lang Stadium to visit the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The game can be seen live online at nasl.com/live.
